Each week we enjoy bringing you up-to-date local and international news, along with the boats that we proudly represent from Absolute and Selene and a brokerage line-up that we sell here and around the world.
Hello Sailors!
Be brave! Now that you've survived some extremely cold weather, you can now come out from under the duvet and enjoy some milder boating weather. The shortest day has been and gone and the temperatures are still on the low side, but now is not the time to slow down. Many boaties are enjoying some spectacular crisp clear days with added marino layers and some warm wool boots - and hopefully some diesel heating - where you can strip off altogether on the boat if that tickles your fancy!
Yes, all in all a good time to take to the briny.

Kaiaraara Kauri Dam - Great Barrier Island
|
Most boaties would have taken the 2 hour walk from the end of the road at Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island taking you to the old kauri dam which was used to transport kauri logs to the mouth of Kaiaraara Bay. The Great Barrier Land Harbour and Mining Company logged kauri in the Kaiaraara, Wairahi and Kiwiriki area from 1862 until 1867 although it is told that the first kauri were taken from Port Fitzroy for use as ship’s spars as early as 1794.

Boatswains have been in charge of the deck force since the days of sail. Setting sails, heaving lines, and hoisting anchors required coordinated team effort and boatswains used whistle signals to order the coordinated actions. When visitors were hoisted aboard or over the side, the pipe was used to order "Hoist Away" or "Avast heaving." In time, piping became a naval honour on shore as well as at sea.
