Fascinating tales

Two incidents found fascinating this week telling of survivors who lived to tell the tale raises an interesting question which may fill any nightmares you have about sailing. 'How would I feel if I fell overboard and how would I handle it?' 'What would it be like if my boat was struck by lightning?'
In the first story, about a couple overboard without lifejackets for 13 hours, it was birds circling which drew the attention of the accidental rescuers. This is more of a lesson for you if you are ever searching for a MOB than it is for the unfortunate victim. The lack of life jackets is hardly worth mentioning, it was so reprehensible.

In the second incident, about the boater hit by lightning, the salient point to note was that the victim was not holding the rail – he felt himself dragged onto it. So that gives pertinence to the advice often repeated that, in a thunderstorm, stay in central space in the cabin, as far away from all metal as possible.

Killer whales groom each other - with pieces of kelp

In the cold waters of the Salish Sea, just off the coast of British Columbia, you might be able to catch a glimpse of a killer whale’s skincare routine. Using their teeth, the giant ocean predators break off short lengths of bull kelp, a seaweed that looks like a multitailed whip, and place it between their stomach and the belly of another whale. The result is a magnificent image.
