Fossilised fish trails reveal earliest steps out of water

About 400 million years ago, vertebrates were confined to the sea; fish had yet to evolve limbs adapted for walking on land. In a new study, published last week in Scientific Reports, researchers report the earliest known fossil evidence of fish testing life beyond the aquatic. If the work pans out, it would push back the earliest migration of fish out of water by at least 10 million years.

Fairytale win for France in SailGP Germany debut

In a stunning weekend comeback, the France SailGP Team claimed their first event win of the 2025 Season – bouncing back from near-disaster in practice to beat the BONDS Flying Roos and Emirates GBR in an action-packed winner-takes-all Final. In a victory driver Quentin Delapierre called, “super special” Les Bleus move into fifth on the Rolex SailGP Championship standings, while Emirates GBR jockeys into third ahead of Spain, now fourth. The Fastnet Disaster - Cowes Week 1979 | |

On August 9, 1979, the Fastnet Race began, soon turning into one of the most tragic events in sailing history. Out of 303 yachts that started, a Force 10 storm on August 14 unleashed 60-knot winds and 50-foot waves that tore through the fleet.
Many yachts capsized, masts broke, and 21 sailors lost their lives. Thanks to heroic rescue efforts, hundreds survived. This race is forever remembered as the “Fastnet Disaster,” marking a turning point for sailing safety worldwide.

Recipe of the Week: Tomato, Chilli & Cream Pasta Sauce

- 60g butter
- 1 small brown onion (80g), chopped finely
- 1 C drained semi-dried tomatoes, chopped coarsely
- ½ teaspoon dried chilli flakes
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
- 300ml cream
- ½ cup (40g) finely grated parmesan

Melt butter in frying pan; cook onion, stirring, until soft. Add tomato, chilli and garlic; cook, stirring, 3 minutes. Add pepper and cream; simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes or until sauce reduces by half. Add cheese; stir over low heat about 2 minutes or until cheese melts. Makes 1 cup and just add cooked pasta of your choice.
